I think murder being legal and the social structure really helps make everything worse... Not to mention the rules that the higher hierarchy makes are ridiculous.
what's the social structure? besides what you mentioned about the stigma of fallen sectors.
There are 26 corporations, from A to Z.
The Head (A Corp) is a mega Corporation that controls the entire City. I would say that they're what seems to be the closest thing to a government. They have a special unit called "The Eye" which is their main intelligence agency. They handle patents throughout all Corporations.
The other 25 Corporations are B to Z and are under The Head. These are the sectors that I mentioned before. I was formerly from L Corp. Each corporation controls a district of The City. Nests are typically more developed and urban environments where people with income live--all the inhabitants are called "Feathers".
Then there are the Fingers (Thumb, Index, Middle, Ring, Pinky) who are the five biggest Syndicates. They each control a territory in the backstreets. I would say the Fingers are equal to each other in terms of strength... they can be made up of multiple smaller Syndicates as well.
The Associations are the biggest fixer groups. Fixers are something like hired help or mercenaries. They come under the Hana Association, which is at the top. Each Association specializes in something, such as Zwei--they focus on protecting their clients and maintain general peacekeeping in their territories.
Fixer offices outside of the Associations are generally made up of a few people. Sometimes they're affiliated with Associations, but most of them are akin to Associations in its infant stages: not very famous, not very good. New Fixers usually end up here where they start climbing up the ranks. Fixer ranks are from 9 to 1, from weakest to strongest, then a Color if they're recognized to be very strong by the Head.
Then there are Rats, who are considered to be low-level criminals that aren't a part of anything. They usually reside in the Backstreets.

sounds complicated. are there ever conflicts between the corporations?
I suppose there would be, but I'm not privy to those details.

how do normal people outside of corporations live their lives? are these groups a big deal to them?
If someone doesn't live in a Nest inside a Corporation, they live in the Backstreets. It's utter Hell to live there. You never know when you could die. You never know if you'll have enough money for food... It's a rough life.

People from the Backstreets are usually left to fend for themselves. To increase the chances of survival, people sometimes get augments, but even the cheapest and shoddiest one are expensive. I considered saving up for one, but it's too much.
