anyway, shu's stood outside the strip mall. it's probably still closed, what with the trial just being over, but he's here anyway, staring at whatever he can of it from their position stuck outside.

[ It sure was. After putting everything back in her room, she finds herself right outside the strip mall. ]

... Ah, Shu. Hello. What brings you here?

Didn't really feel like going back to my room. So-- I guess I'm here. You?

I was thinking back... Shouxue and I selected clothes for each other. They're the things we wore today, actually.

[ ... ]

Those kind of clothes were not something we usually wear, so I said that we could wear it together someday. I received a message from her before the trial that she'd wear hers, so I did too.

You came here for them?

[ the clothes that shouxue was voted to die in... ]

... Yes. It was the week when the strip mall first opened. It made me really happy that Shouxue thought the clothes looked good on me, so I wanted to pick something that would match up to her beauty in return. She said that she didn't usually wear white and I usually don't wear clothes that show off a lot of skin, so... we would wear them together to help each other get used to wearing things like this.

[ and now it ended up like this ] I thought it was different to see her in white. You were going to keep doing that? Helping each other pick out clothes?

I planned to, but I never got to tell her. Everything just kept happening...

[ She has a crooked smile. ]

She said that she wasn't used to the styles they had here. I'm not a fashion expert by any means, but... I wanted her to enjoy this sort of life too, away from what she was used to.

I kinda hope tomorrow go a little differently. Given who’s in there but— [ but. ] If not, and she’s the one that walks out, you should spend some time with her. She might not be up for shopping, but it sounds like you enjoyed her company.

... I hope so too. If permitted, I would like to spend time with her again without a wall between us.

[ Her shoulders droop. ]

I enjoyed her company a lot. She even stood up for me and... I was happy that someone would do that for me.

[ Like in today's trial with Rodya. ]

We can't really say what's going to happen until tomorrow's over. But I hope you get to talk to her again, without that wall.

[ Yuri nods and quietly breathes out. She will still prepare for the worst as she has always been. ]

The trial... was such a mess.

[ at this point, it's the smart thing to do. even if you hope for better. ]

Nine hours, double the investigating. Kinda hope we don't have to do that again. [ ... ] At all, would be better, but if we can't have that I'd rather it didn't get doubled up.

Being on the suspect list doesn't really feel as bad as seeing other people on the list.

[ She looks at Shu, since he was also on a narrowed suspect list last week. ]

I suppose it's partly due to knowing that I was innocent, but seeing people I care about on the list made me feel more anxious.

Unless we're spiralling and running out of time, you'll have nothing to hide. Ultimately, we're looking for answers and the truth, but there's a saying about the truth hurting.

A lot of people do, because of the whole confronting thing. [ he looks thoughtful. ] The truth is complicated sometimes. It's easier to focus on a lie sometimes, even if you know the truth is something different.

Really? You seem like you have yourself handled all the time... I was wondering if that was from plenty of experience.

That's maybe more of an attitude adjustment, but... a few years ago I didn't cope with something very well. Took me a while to realise I was wrong, but I lose a lot by admitting that.

So I don't. Not yet at least.
